Burhani Foundation (India) - BFI in association with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has in its endeavor to encourage and promote environmental research and development, instituted the "BFI-NEERI Award" for outstanding and socially relevant Research & Development in Environmentally Sound Technologies.

Nominations were invited every year from leading technical and scientific institutions having a track record for encouraging applied research in preventive environmental management by making effective use of their resources while aiming to achieve sustainable economic growth targets.

The Award aims to recognize the contribution of Indian environmental scientists towards achieving the above goals by promoting technologies that, protect and improve environment. This could be done by implementing practical low-cost solutions, minimizing polluting, using all their resources in a more sustainable manner, by recycling waste products, and being able to handle residual wastes in a more acceptable manner.

The First BFI - NEERI Award for outstanding and socially relevant R & D in Environmentally Sound Technologies has been awarded to:

1. Prof. Dr. H.M.Chawla, I.I.T. Delhi
2. Dr. S.Sivasankar, NCL Pune

The Award was presented on the World Environment Day - 5th June 1998 and consisted of Citation and Cash Prize of Rs.1 lakh.
